Yes, God Reigns — But It Doesn’t Always Feel Like It!

January 31st, 2008

The Bible clearly reveals the truth that God is sovereign. Simply put, He created all things and controls all things (Colossians 1:15-17). I certainly believe this to be true. So, when positive things are happening in my life, it’s easy for me to confidently speak spiritual words to support this truth. Can you relate to any of these moments?

You get that great job promotion or raise.
God is good!”

You’re happily married or in a loving, supportive relationship.
“God has blessed me!”

You’re in good health.
“God is my physician!”

You arrive at your travel destination safely.
“God, thanks for traveling mercies!”

You finally find that missing $20 bill buried underneath your dirty-clothes pile.
God, praise You for your financial blessings!”

Still, I don’t know about you, but “Good Times” isn’t the only show that comes on in my life, so to speak. I’ve had a front-row seat to many episodes of “Miami Vice” and “Lincoln Heights”. In fact, over the past 3 years I’ve been provided with what has seemed like unlimited viewing of an “Ultimate Fighting Championship” match. (Ouch!) During such negative life showings it gets a little harder for me to talk about what I already know to be true–that is, God is sovereign at all times, whether “good” or “bad”.

In fact, it was during one these “bad times” that I was inspired to write the song “He Reigns”, a song featured on the RedeemedSoul.com CD release “The New Soul (Various Artists)” and performed by gospel singer Bridgette Campbell. In writing this song, God reminded me that despite the “darkness” of the difficulty I was facing; despite how insurmountable it looked to me; and despite how very scared it made me feel; that He was sovereign over it all. That He would sovereignly use that situation and my pain to bring about His will for my life. Whoever thought that pain could be so good for you?

Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t shout with excitement, “Thank You God, please give me even more pain”, whenever I face downturns. But, I do remember that God is all powerful and all-knowing and that He’ll somehow get me through the mad-crazy-soul-wrenching situations in my life.

It is comforting to know that despite how I feel, “He Reigns”!
